Britain Provides Multi-Million
Pounds Aid For Zimbabwe

Britain has announced that it is
giving eight million pounds sterling to Zimbabwe to provide for
food, for an estimated four million people facing starvation.
The British Embassy in Harare
said in a statement, that the money would be given to the World
Food Programme, WFP to procure and distribute food to starving
people in the country.
The British Embassy said it would
work with other international aid agencies, in addition to the
WFP, to avert starvation in Zimbabwe.
“Our eight
million pound contribution will go a long way to reduce hunger
and vulnerability in Zimbabwe and will be spent on much needed
food aid through the World Food Programme,”
the statement said.
“We are
working closely with other donors to further strengthen WFP's
monitoring systems to ensure that food aid reaches everyone who
needs it,”
It added.
Drought and poor agricultural
policies have led to frequent food shortages in Zimbabwe, with
the authorities saying the country this year, needed to import
at least one million tonnes of food to avert hunger.
The government has already
started importing maize, Zimbabwe's staple food, from
neighbouring countries such as Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia.
