Nigeria To Feature In
Youths Olympics Games
Nigeria
has confirmed her participation in the first Youths Olympic
Games scheduled for Singapore in August.
Minister and Chairman, National Sports Commission, Mr. Sani
Ndanusa gave the indication in Abuja while giving an insight
into the country’s sporting calendar and activities for the year
2010.
The Youths Olympics will feature competitions for boys and girls
under the age of 18years, in twenty-six sporting events.
More than trophy
To leave a lasting legacy for outstanding participants in the
games, the host will award scholarships to the young athletes to
study in Singapore. The recipients will also get a fully
subsidized academic and sports education at the Singapore Sports
School, for between four and six years.
The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games is aimed at inspiring
youths around the world to embrace, embody and express the
Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect.
It is also expected to create a lasting sporting, cultural and
educational legacy for Singapore and youths from around the
world, as well as enhance and elevate the sporting culture
locally and regionally.
Assurances on early preparation
The Minister of Sports says the commission has integrated in its
road map, plans for early preparation for major international
engagements.
He said the road map would ensure good results for Nigeria
during the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India, the London Olympics
in 2012 and several other competitions in she will participate.
The Nigerian sports minister also said a partnership between the
commission and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism had been
established.
The main objective, according to him, is to exploit tourism
potentials in sports in order to create economic empowerment.
