Yar’Adua Urges National Assembly to Fast Track Power
Reform Bill
Obiora Ani, Abuja
The
Nigerian President, Umar Yar’Adua has requested the
National Assembly to hasten the amendment the laws
establishing the Electric Power Sector Reform Act
2005, to enable him scrap the Rural Electrification
Agency.
In a letter to the Senate, President Yar’Adua, urged
the law makers to amend the Act to repeal the rural
electricity agency.
Analysts are of the opinion that the request
followed the alleged embezzlement of over N500
billion involving some members of the National
Assembly in connivance with some officials of the
rural electrification agency.
The agency established in 2006 is charged with the
responsibility of providing reliable and affordable
electricity supply to the rural dwellers.
