The
Local Organising Committee, LOC for the FIFA under-17 Championship, Nigeria
2009, has been explaining reasons behind the huge turn-out of fans at the
Calabar centre.
In a chat with Voice of Nigeria, the Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Raymond
Obeten said the passion for sports; especially football is very high resulting
in government’s attention to the sector.
Obeten said government has invested a lot of fund to build new infrastructures
while the old ones have been re-built to conform to modern standard.
He however expressed the hopes that the state would continue bidding to host
future international events because of the importance attached to sports.
Calabar, the
Cross-River state capital, in Southern Nigeria, is one of the six centres
hosting the FIFA under-17 Championship.
Countries to
tackle the field at the Calabar centre are the Gambia, The Netherlands, Iran and
Colombia.
Calabar was also among states that hosted the FIFA under-20 Championship in
1999.
