MDG Project
Targets Water, Health Improvements
The
Office of the Millennium Development Goals, MDGs in Nigeria says
it has so far, invested in more than ten thousand health and
water improvement projects.
The Assistant to the President on Millennium Development Goals,
Hajiya Amina Az-Zubair, said the projects were executed in
partnership with some states, under the Conditional Grants
Scheme.
Under the scheme, the federal government provides some funding
while the states contribute a percentage of their federal grants
for execution of projects, specified under the MDGs.
Az-Zubair said her office had also provided health insurance
cover for one point five million mothers and children aged five
and under five in twelve states.
To enhance maternal health care, it engaged two thousand, six
hundred and eighty midwives nationwide to support child delivery
and reduce the rate of maternal deaths.
To boost the MDGs projects, state governors are advised to
prevail on the local governments to supply water, perimeter
fencing and health workers at the primary health centres
supported by the MDG projects.
