30-Million Gallon Water Project

The
government of Nigeria’s southwestern State of Lagos has embarked
on the construction of mini-water schemes to provide 30 million
gallons of water per day.
Already, three out of the eight water scheme have been completed
and commissioned. The remaining five have been slated for
commissioning in the first quarter of this year.
Speaking at the commissioning of three of the water projects
located in the high density areas of Magodo, Mende and the Isawo
rural community in Lagos, Governor Babatunde Fasola said “
the provision of potable water to rural communities is one of
the commitments of this administration which is crucial to
sustainable development and attainment of the MDGs in the
state.”
Commissioner for Rural Development, Prince Lanre Balogun was
quite elated with the commissioning of micro water scheme for
Isawo community in Ikorodu area of the state.
According to him, “water is life and the commissioning will
go a long way in providing uninterrupted water supply to the
inhabitants of Isawo community and its environs, thereby
reducing incidence of water-borne diseases and loss of man hour
in search of potable water by children and women.”
The people in the community expressed satisfaction with the
water projects and urged the federal government to ensure
adequate power supply to compliment the 500 KVA power generating
sets to pump the water for the community.
The Project
Contract for the Isawo mini water scheme was awarded in 2008 at
a cost of N45 million. It will generate 60,000 gallons per day.
