UK Warns On Effect Of
Climate Change
British
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has warned of a 'catastrophe' of
floods, droughts, and deadly heat waves if world leaders don't
agree a climate change deal this December.
In a speech to the Major Economies Forum in London, Mr. Brown
has insisted there is no 'plan B' if agreement isn't reached at
December's UN climate summit in Copenhagen.
The Copenhagen talks aim to produce a successor to the Kyoto
climate treaty, but preparatory discussions at the UN are
stalled.
Mr Brown warned that without action, deadly heat waves like that
seen in Europe in Year 2003 could become the norm for the
continent and that the UK could see catastrophic flooding and
drought while the world would see an increase in conflict
fuelled by climate-induced migration.
The Copenhagen summit in December is intended to produce a new
global climate change deal to replace the ageing Kyoto treaty.
The British Prime Minister is one of few world leaders that has
committed to going to the summit, in an effort to shine the
spotlight on it.
