International
Tennis Federation Warm Up Tournament Begins
One
of the points-earning events in the calendar of the
International Tennis Federation (ITF), the Africa Junior
Championships (AJC) warm-up tournament, has begun in Abuja,
Nigeria's capital.
With players drawn from all over the world, the grade two
championships will enable the players to garner points in the
ITF ranking.
Apart from the twenty-eight African nations taking part in next
week's Africa Junior Championships, over twenty other nations
from Asia and Europe are participating in the warm-up event.
Nigeria is presenting eighteen players for the event in the
U-18, 16 and 14 categories, with the main draw, which kicked off
on Tuesday.
Twenty-four players competed for places in the main draw during
the preliminaries, with 16 joining the 48 already in the main
draw.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s national junior team coach, Mohammed Ubale,
says the tournament will keep the players in shape for the AJC
slated for next week, while some of them would make the new
world ranking.
