Scientists Tasked On
Technology Base
Nigeria’s
Vice-President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, has called on African
scientists to assist in establishing a technological base for
the continent.
He made the call at the opening ceremony of a workshop on
"African Science and Technology Grand Challenges,’’ at the
African University of Science and Technology, Abuja.
Dr. Goodluck Jonathan said that, ’’Countries of Europe and
America had left Africa behind in the field of economic
development while Asia and Latin America have leapfrogged to
attain visible economic growth, also leaving Africa behind.’’
Jonathan noted that the development of these countries was
hinged on science and technology, stressing that Africa has
realised its relegation in world affairs vis-à-vis economic
development.
He said that government, on realizing the relevance of a
technology-driven economy, created the Ministry of Science and
Technology to promote science and technology, not only for the
development of Nigeria, but also of Africa.
Clarion call
’’I hereby call on African scientists at home and in
Diaspora to assist in establishing a scientific and
technological base without delay to foster and boost science and
technology in Africa,’’ Dr. Jonathan beckoned.
Prof. Hilary Inyang, President of the technology university

the institution.
He said the institution was established to sustain development
in Africa with a mandate to look at various challenges
