16
Somali migrants have died in the Gulf of Aden while
attempting to migrate to Yemen, according to the
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
The victims drowned after being forced into the sea
by smugglers who feared being discovered by Yemeni
authorities.
Sixty four migrants were able to swim to the coast
of Yemen.
According to the UNHCR, 36,000 Africans have arrived
in the country so far in 2009, 33 per cent more than
a year ago.
In 2008, almost a thousand people were estimated to
have drowned during illegal crossings.
