Senegal Plans 1,600 Soldiers For Darfur
Senegal has concluded plans to send 1,600 soldiers and
policemen to western Sudan’s region of Darfur within the
framework of the African Union (AU) peacekeeping force.
A report from Dakar quoted the Chief of Staff of the Senegalese
Army, Major General Abdoulaye Fall, as saying that the move was
aimed at boosting AU’s materials and logistics.
The Senegalese Army Chief observed that, "the difficulties in
Darfur come from the fact that originally this was a mere
observer mission. The observers are not armed for the security
stakes."
The AU soldiers have been susceptible to deadly attacks, blamed
on Darfur rebels.
The last incident at the beginning of this month resulted in the
death of seven Nigerians, one Malian, one Senegalese policeman
and one Rwandan.
Military experts believe that the present posture of Senegalese
President, Abdoulaye Wade is a welcome development.
Mr. Abdoulaye Wade, irritated by the death of the Senegalese,
had threatened to withdraw his country's contingent if the
Sudanese government and the international community did not
guarantee the security of AU forces.
