Investigation On Rights Abuses
Rebecca Mu’azu, Abuja
The
Republic of Saharawi Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Oubi
Bashir, has called on the UN and other
non-governmental organisations to investigate human
rights abuses in his country.
Ambassador Bashir said this during a courtesy visit
to the Director General Voice of Nigeria, Mallam
Abubakar Jijiwa.
He asked the world body to include the issue of
protecting the rights of civilians in its charter.
Fighting a cause
Ambassador Bashir said the people of Saharawi should
be allowed to decide their independence through a
referendum and that Morocco should be responsible
for the protection of Saharawis by accepting the
outcome.
On his part, the Director General of Voice of
Nigeria, Mallam Jijiwa, said Nigeria recognizes
Saharawi as a country and shares its plight.
He said that Voice of Nigeria, as an international
media organisation, would be willing to assist the
country to achieve its goals.
The Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic is a partially
recognized state.
It claims sovereignty over the entire territory of
Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony.
