House
Of Reps Rejects Executive Intervention On
Constitutional Review
Obiora Ani, Abuja
The
Nigerian House of Representatives Ad-hoc committee
on the Review of the 1999 Constitution says the
executive cannot dictate the approach to adopt in
amending the 1999 constitution.
Chairman of the media and publicity sub-committee of
the committee, Eziuche Ubani told newsmen in Abuja
that it was wrong for the Attorney General and
Minister of Justice, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa, to
suggest the method that should be used in
considering the bills.
He said that the committee would consider all the
bills simultaneously and that it would be senseless
and unnecessary altering the constitution first,
take it to the State Houses of Assembly for
concurrence before the consideration of the other
bills.
Point Of Interference
Mr Aondoakaa, had at the start of the Public Hearing
on the bills faulted the approach adopted by the
House Ad-hoc Committee and asked the lawmakers to
start with the bill seeking alteration of the
constitution before considering the other five.
The Presidency had sent six bills to both the Senate
and House of Representatives on electoral reforms
and the amendment of the 1999 constitution.
