Venezuela
Launches Global Radio
The
Venezuelan government has launched a new public radio network
that aims to integrate the Global South.
Based in
Caracas, Radio del Sur has 88 partner stations that will
broadcast some of its public interest programming around North,
Central and South America, Spain and Africa.
Over a third of
Radio del Sur's content will be produced in Venezuela, where its
broadcasts currently cover 36 per cent of the territory.
The launch
follows Venezuela's recent crackdown on private radio stations
and the creation in 2005 of Telesur, a television network backed
by several Latin American countries.
