Nigeria:
Government Raises Prisoners’ Feeding Fee
Nigeria has announced an increase in the daily
feeding cost for prison inmates.
The nation’s highest decision making body, the Federal Executive
council at its meeting, approved the hike from N150 to N200 per
inmate with effect from January 1, 2008.
The Minister of Information and Communication, Mr John Odey,
said the increase was part of ongoing prison reforms.
The minister said the council also looked into how the
expenditure profile of the prisons could be shared among the
three tiers of government to further improve the living
conditions of inmates.
He also said that the council approved the provision of basic
needs in the prisons, such as potable water, gas and electricity
supply.
The feeding cost was first reviewed in Year 2000.
Other Decisions
The council appreciated the heroic performance of Samuel Peter
at the WBC Heavyweight Champion fight.
Consequently, the body resolved that the Minister of Sports,
Alhaji Abdurrahman Gimba, would present the WBC Heavyweight
Champion to President Umaru Yar'Adua any time he returns to the
country.
Other issues discussed are sustainable agriculture, qualitative
education and improved healthcare provision.
