Nigeria Plans Improved Maritime Surveillance
The
Nigerian government plans to install radars along Akwa Ibom maritime borders, in
southern Nigeria, to monitor movements along its coasts.
The chairman of the committee on Maritime Security in the lower house of
assembly, Mr. Patty Ineme, said the government was determined to secure the
nation's waters against piracy and terrorism.
Ineme noted government's huge investments in maritime security, taking into
consideration, the massive investment potential in the Gulf of Guinea where,
according to him, ’’Nigeria enjoys much territorial advantage.’’
He said that with the development, sea piracy, oil bunkering, smuggling and
dumping of illegal wastes would be eliminated along Nigeria’s coastal lines.
Ineme also commended the Akwa Ibom state government for complementing Federal
Government’s efforts by donating gunboats to the Police and the Navy, for
coastal patrol.
