UN Urges Peaceful Resolution In Guinea
Bissau
UN
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on the military and
political leadership of Guinea Bissau to resolve their
differences peacefully.
Ban made the appeal in a statement after reports of military
incidents in which Prime Minister, Carlos Gomes and Chief of the
Armed Forces, Zamora Induta, were detained.
He urged all parties in the West African country to maintain
constitutional order and the rule of law.
Sustenance of Stability
The statement said Ban was following the military incidents with
concern after the detention and subsequent release of the Prime
Minister.
The Secretary-General stressed the need to avoid any risks to
the gains made by Guinea Bissau in its peace consolidation
efforts.
According to the statement, the Secretary-General’s Special
Representative for Guinea Bissau, Mr. Joseph Mutaboba, is
working closely with other international partners including the
ECOWAS and the AU to support national efforts on sustainable
stability in the country.
The Arrest
Earlier, a statement issued by the UN Integrated Office in
Guinea Bissau (UNIOGBIS) deplored the arrest and subsequent
release of the leaders.
The UN Office said soldiers evacuated former navy commander,
Bubo Na Tchuto, who had faced charges of an attempted coup and
had sought refuge in the UN compound in Bissau for more than
three months.
Bubo Na Tchuto left the UN building voluntarily and signed a
document saying he was leaving on his own volition.
Spokesman for UNIOGBIS, Vladimir Monteiro said the intervention
of the military power demonstrates the fragility of Guinea
Bissau.
He noted that the events were occurring at a time when Guinea
Bissau was in a dynamic development.
