Nigeria Assures Serbia On Kosovo

Nigeria
has assured Serbia that it will not recognise Kosovo
as an independent state.
President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua gave President Boris
Tadic this assurance during bilateral talks after
the fifteenth summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in
Sharm El Sheik, Egypt.
President Yar’Adua said Nigeria’s position on the
non-recognition of Kosovo was based on her
historical experience of the civil war of 1967 to
1970, the aftermath of which renewed her to resolve
to maintain her territorial integrity and
sovereignty.
He said Nigeria would continue to embark on policies
for nation building and take strategic steps to
forge a heterogeneous and inclusive nation.

The Serbian President had appealed to President
Yar’Adua to re-open the Nigerian mission in Belgrade
to strengthen existing ties between the two
countries.
President Boris Tadic said Serbia had already
referred the case of Kosovo’s self declared
independence to the International Court of Justice
at The Hague, for adjudication. Judgment is expected
to be delivered in Year 2010.
