NIGERIA TO
HOST ECOWAS CHEMICAL WORKSHOP.
Nigeria
is to host the Economic Community of West African States ECOWAS
regional workshop on Chemical Hazard Communication and Global
Harmonized systems from May 13th – 15th , 2008.
The workshop will be jointly organized by the Federal Ministry
of Environment, ECOWAS Commission, and UN Institute for Training
and Research. Other Partners are International Labour
Organization, and World Health Organization with support from
the government of Switzerland and Germany.
A statement issues in Abuja said that Nigeria would serve as a
pilot country to undertake national capacity building project
for implementing the global Harmonized System, GHS, in the
African region.
The spokesman for the Nigerian Ministry of Environment Clement
Egbeama said GHS is an international standard and a coherent
approach to define and classify chemical hazards and
communicating hazards, information through labels and safety
data sheets.
He said that GHS affects four key sector of industrial
workplace, agriculture, transport and consumer products.
The workshop will discuss experiences with chemical hazard
communication in the ECOWAS region and proffer solutions.
