Niger Appeals For Aid
To Combat Food Shortages
Niger’s
has said it needs one hundred and twenty-three million dollars
in international aid to combat the risk of food shortages this
year.
Prime Minister, Mahamodou Danda called for international support
to the efforts made by Niger to address famine and to arrive at
sustainable self-sufficiency in food production.
Danda said moderate to severe food insecurity, a spectrum that
runs from foregoing meals to malnutrition, could affect almost
eight million people or around sixty percent of Niger's
population.
Since the February military coup, Niger's military rulers have
accepted United Nations estimates that at least two hundred
thousand children face severe acute malnutrition, a condition
that requires hospital treatment.
Humanitarians had warned that food shortages could create even
more instability in the country.
