NIGER DELTA
SUMMIT STAKEHOLDERS WOOS INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY.
The
International community has been called upon to participate in
the First Niger Delta Assembly, taking place in Port Harcourt,
Rivers State, southern Nigeria.
The Assembly is expected to present a united voice to the
demands of various ethnic groups and civil society organizations
in the region.
A coalition of ethnic groups and civil societies in the Niger
Delta under the auspices of the United Niger Delta Energy
Development Security Strategy made this call, saying since Niger
Delta issues affected global peace there was need to
internationalize them.
The President of the coalition, Professor Pat Utomi, said at a
news conference in Lagos south west Nigeria that international
involvement would allow for a better global appreciation of the
problems of the region.
Utomi said that the conference would create an opportunity for
harmonization of the views of all groups in the region.
He said that what exists at present are various groups, though
seeking the same thing, yet, speaking disparately, and
approaching it from different perspective which made
actualization difficult.
