Card In Niger Delta

The
International Fund for Agricultural Development, IFAD says most
of its sub component programme designed to tackle the needs of
rural populace in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria has been
completed.
IFAD’s Programme Officer in Cross River state, Mr. Innocent
Ogbin said in an interview with Voice of Nigeria in Calabar,
southern Nigeria, that some the projects include skills
enhancement, infrastructure for the sustainable livelihood and
natural resources management, rehabilitation of schools,
provision of potable water, provision of rural feeder roads as
well as construction of civic centres.
Mr. Ogbin said that IFAD, under the first phase of its programme
for the region, had also embarked on institutional capacity
building strengthening and village development interventions.
He said the completed projects would soon be commissioned.
The programme officer said that IFAD signed a Memorandum of
Understanding with the Nigerian government to embark on an
eight-year development plan of natural resources as well as
provision of basic necessities that would improve the lives of
the rural poor and empower the youths in the Niger Delta region.
Mr. Ogbin also said IFAD had designed a special programme to
respond to problem of food crisis in the area, emphasizing the
agency’s commitment to ensuring full scale implementation of the
programmes.
