Uche Aneke, Abuja
Nigeria’s
Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan says Nigeria will
conduct a credible election in 2011.
Speaking at a breakfast meeting with the Council on Foreign
Relations in Washington, Acting President Jonathan said his
government will introduce a number of changes in the leadership
of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to
ensure that elections are transparent and acceptable to the
international community.
Dr. Jonathan said INEC would work towards declaring election
results on the same day as polling were concluded, as witnessed
in the last election in Anambra state, eastern Nigeria, as a
strategy to guarantee credible elections.
Speaking on issues discussed at his meeting with President
Barrack Obama, Dr. Jonathan said contemporary issues that were
crucial to maintaining cordial relationships between Nigeria and
the United States were examined.
Administration’s priority
He identified socio-economic development, electoral reforms,
restoring lasting peace to the Niger Delta, combating corruption
and a determination to restore Nigeria’s image as the major
priority of the present government.
Others are sustaining Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa and as
a key member of the international community, with a commitment
to fight terrorism and promote global peace.
