MOZAMBIQUE
TO HOST UN RISK PROGRAMME.
Mozambique
has been chosen to take part in a pilot UN programme to identify
risks and enhance early warning systems in disaster prone
countries.
Floods, droughts, cyclones, landslides and earthquakes are among
the natural disasters that have affected Mozambique in the last
five years.
In Mozambique, the programme would be used to boost early
warning disaster systems in high risk areas, which have been
accredited with the reduction in deaths from this year’s
flooding.
Coordinator of the Global Risk Identification Programme, Carlos
Vilacis said twenty countries would take part in the project,
also including Nepal and Mexico.
Villacis said twenty million dollars would be used to train
officials from the three countries, who would in turn train
other officials.
