Collins Atohengbe,Pretoria, South Africa
The
South Africa Health Department is to introduce a national
immunization programme this month to check measles epidemics in
the country.
Proactive Measures
As a first safety measure, isolation wards have been set up to
deal with more than five hundred cases of children who have been
infected in the Western Cape Province where emergency was
declared on Friday.
Over four thousand cases have been reported in Gauteng Province
since the epidemic was first reported last year.
Fighting H1N1 Virus
Also, South Africa is due to take delivery of doses of the H1N1
vaccines to protect its citizens against swine flu as the FIFA
world cup football tournament draws closer.
The health ministry said everyone including pregnant women would
be vaccinated to ensure that South Africans are effectively
protected from the infection.
Visitors are expected to enter the country from endemic areas
during the FIFA football tournament beginning on June 11, 2010.
