Lower House
Legislator Resigns
Chairman of the House of Representatives
Committee on states and Local government Affairs, Mr. KGB
Oguakwa, has resigned.
In a statement, Mr. Oguakwa said that, following the submission
of the report of the panel investigating the award of contract
involving the speaker and some members, many Nigerians appeared
to perceive the House as carrying a moral burden which it is
expected to discard.
Mr. Oguakwa further stated that it had become difficult for him
to fathom how certain legislative oversight functions could be
truly and effectively undertaken while the present perceived
credibility deficit dangles on the House.
However in a swift reaction, Chairman of the Committee on Rules
and Business, Mr. Eta Enang, said that Mr. Oguakwa’s resignation
had nothing to do with the panel’s investigations and report.
In his view, Mr. Oguakwa’s earlier request that the House rules
be reviewed, for his committee’s mandate to include boundary
issues, may have informed his decision to resign.
