Commission Plans Literacy Survey
The
National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-formal
Education, in collaboration with the National Bureau of
Statistics, is to conduct a National Literacy Survey.
Chairman, Governing Board of the commission, Mr. Paschal Bafyau
said in Abuja at a stakeholders' meeting on effective
implementation of non-formal education programme that the survey
would enable the commission to measure the literacy competence
of persons aged fifteen years and above.
He said to enhance planning and budgeting, the commission would
develop a Non-formal Education Data Base and provide a website
for Non-formal Education Management Information System (NFE-MIS)
for easy collection of data.
Bafyau said the Nigerian government was set to coordinate the
efforts of state and local governments to improve literacy as
well as achieve the objectives of the Education for All
programme and the MDGs.
He described as alarming, the number of illiterates in Nigeria,
stating that the 2006 census had put the figure at more than
forty million, of which sixty percent were women.
He said this had placed Nigeria among the E-Nine countries.
He urged state and local governments to support activities which
reduce illiteracy and provide statistics to enable stakeholders
plan for literacy programmes.
