Mercy Oko, Lagos
The
National Demographic Health Survey has revealed that Maternal
Mortality is on the decrease in Nigeria.
According to statistics from the Federal Ministry of Health,
there are five hundred and forty-five per a hundred live birth
compared to eight hundred per a thousand live birth recorded in
2003.
Dr. Nkiru Onuekwusi, a Director in the Ministry gave the figure
at the presentation of a book, “Science in Action”.
The Science in Action is an overview of the current status of
Maternal, newborn and Child health in Africa, meant to sensitize
the health sector on the current status in the
Mother-newborn-child care and the evidence-based method of
translating Science into action.
Science in Action analyses how lives could be saved through
proactive actions by health systems.
Based on the figures from the book, medical experts agreed that
partnership between Scientists, Health Care Providers and the
government would assist greatly towards improving health system
and achieving MDG goals in Nigeria.
