Mining
Operations Resume In Guinea
After
a two-day strike called by unions in reaction to a bloody
crackdown on anti-government protesters on September 28,
normalcy has returned to Guinea, with mining operations also
resumed.
Officials
of Guinea Bauxite Company and Russia's UC RUSAL, which runs an
aluminum refinery and some mining operations, confirmed this
positive development.
Last
month's violence, which human rights groups say left over one
hundred and fifty civilians dead led to intense international
calls for the junta to relinquish power.
Call
for trial
The EU
Development Commissioner, Karel de Gucht has called for the
trial of Guinea's junta leader, Captain Moussa Dadis Camara for
crimes against humanity, after last month's crackdown on
opposition protesters.
De Gucht
told newsmen in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, that the
repression on September 28 was a brutal and monumental crime
against humanity which must not go unpunished.
More than
150 people were reportedly killed when troops opened fire on
opposition demonstrators at a stadium in the Guinean capital
Conakry.
The
military government however, says 56 people were killed and not
150 as claimed by the opposition.
