CRISIS: GAMBIA THREATENS TRADERS.
Gambia’s
President, Yahya Jammeh has threatened to lock up traders who
sell rice at more than the going rate in an effort to stop them
from profiteering from high world food prices.
Jammeh said he had reached a deal with rice importers to sell
rice at a maximum of thirty-nine dollars per sack.
The president said he would fire officials or send businessmen
to jail if they sold rice above he agreed price.
Jammeh, who is making an annual ten-day tour of the country,
urged his people to increase their farming output to counter the
problem of high world prices.
Rising world prices for staple food commodities such as rice and
maize have caused unrest in many countries, and some governments
have accused traders of cashing in on the crisis to get higher
prices from poor customers.
