Opposition Parties
File Petitions Against Anambra State Governor
No
fewer than five candidates and their political parties have
filed petitions against Governor Peter Obi at the Anambra
Election Petitions Tribunal.
The Action Congress (AC), Hope Democratic Party (HDP), Nation
Democratic Party (NDP), the National Solidarity Democratic Party
(NSDP) and the United Nigeria Peoples Party (UNPP) had filed
petitions on various grounds.
Governor Obi won the February 6 Gubernatorial Election in
Anambra on the platform of the All Progressive Grand Alliance,
APGA.
A petition filed by Chief Victor Anigbata, the NSDP candidate,
alleged that the election results did not reflect the choice of
the electorate.
He alleged that more than 84 per cent of registered voters in
the state were disenfranchised, citing his ward, Nando Ward III,
where out of about 2,000 registered voters, less than 50 persons
voted.
The governorship candidate of the NDP Chijioke Ndubuisi on his
part demanded the nullification of the election on the grounds
that a court order had restrained the Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) from conducting it.
Meanwhile, INEC's Head of Legal Services in Anambra, Mr Sulayman
Ibrahim, said only two petitions, those of the AC and HDP, had
been served on the commission.
He said INEC would file its defence soon.
