Meat Firm To
Fight Deforestation
Four
of the world's largest meat producers agreed this week to
support environmentalists' efforts against the deforestation of
the Amazon rain forest in Brazil.
The four cattle companies - Bertin, JBS-Friboi, Marfrig and
Minerva - committed to monitoring their supply chains to make
sure they do not buy cattle kept on newly deforested, indigenous
and protected areas.
The announcement came after a conference organised by Greenpeace
in Sao Paulo.
The companies said clear targets would be set for the
registration of farms that supply cattle directly or indirectly.
This will also contribute to banning farms that use slave labour.
Brazil is the world's largest beef exporter and also the fourth
largest producer of greenhouse gas emissions, which is boosted
by deforestation, among other factors.
