Experts In New Media Recommend Review Overhaul
Of Journalism Curriculum
Ahaziah Suleiman, Lagos
Experts in New Media have recommended an
overhaul of the Curriculum of Mass Communication
training institutions in Africa to meet the
challenges of the New Media.
This recommendation was contained in a
communiqué issued at a three day conference on
Journalism and New Media technologies in Africa,
held at the Pan African University, Lagos.
The participants said the curricula of most Mass
Communication training Institutions in Africa
lack the new requirement of the Industry.
The experts want media organisations in Africa
to invest in new technologies if Africa is to
remain relevant in the scheme of things under
the new information technology order.
The conference expressed concerns over the
threat posed to practitioners by Citizens
Journalists who are taking the work of
mainstream reporters.
On digitization the conference appealed to
African governments to fast track the process so
as to meet the 2015 deadline.
Participants at the conference were drawn from
Nigeria, the UK, Ghana, Botswana, Kenya, South
Africa and Tanzania.
