President Yar Adua Flags off Dredging of River Niger
President
Yar Adua has flagged-off dredging of River Niger in
Lokoja, Kogi State, to boost Nigeria's quest for
socio-economic development.
Before the
ceremony, the Minister of Transport, Alhaji Ibrahim
Isa Bio, had visited the site of dredging, and urged
the contractors handling the project to complete it
in record.
The former
Minister of Transportation, Mrs Deziani Allison-Madueke
had signed a 34.8 billion naira contract for the
dredging of the lower Niger, which covers about 5.72
kilometers from Warri in the Niger Delta region , to
Baro in the north central state of Niger in December
2008.
The project
was divided into five segments and awarded to four
contractors to ensure timely completion .
They called
led by Messrs William Lloyd and Van Oord, said when
completed the project would open up all towns and
communities along the river for increased social and
economic activities than three inland ports are
being constructed to complement the project.
