Kenyan Parliament
Passes Draft Constitution
Kenya's
parliament has unanimously passed a draft constitution that is
one of several key reforms steps needed to avoid a repeat of
political violence that followed Kenya's disputed 2007
presidential elections.
The Parliament's vote sets the stage for Kenya to go to a
referendum on the draft charter within ninety days.
Debate On Draft
Constitutional Affairs Minister, Mutula Kilonzo said he has
drafted regulations for the referendum to ensure debate on the
draft constitution, which aims not to divide the country, as
witnessed in the lead-up to the 2005 plebiscite.
Activists and politicians have lobbied for Kenya's constitution
to be rewritten because of the enormous power the president
holds. It is thought to be the root of the country's
inequalities.
