Kogi
State Governor Seeks For Extension Of Broadcast
Digitisation Deadline
Ishaq Dan Imam. Lokoja
The
Kogi State Governor in central Nigeria, Alhaji
Ibrahim Idris has called for the extension of the
deadline for broadcast digitisation process beyond
2012.
According to him, the extension is imperative to
enable the local broadcast stations in Nigeria
attain maximum success in Digital broadcasting.
He said the deadline set for the Commonwealth member
Broadcasters to attain the migration from analogue
to Digital broadcasting by the year 2012 was
unrealizable.
Addressing the fiftieth general assembly of the
Broadcasting Organizations of Nigeria, BON, in
Lokoja, Governor Idris said it took the United
States nearly a decade of preparations to attain the
transmission to Digital broadcasting in spite of its
advancement in sophisticated technology.
Governor Idris said there was no justification for
the Nigerian broadcast industry to attain same feat
in terms of full compliance with the deadline within
the same time frame.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of BON, and
Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, Mallam
Abubakar Jijiwa decried the inertia among private
media organisations to improve the skills of their
workers despite the professional limitations of
their workforce.
He said the current situation is unacceptable to the
growth of the broadcast media.
Six former officials of BON, and Presidents of the
Commonwealth Broadcasting Association, were honoured
for their services to the organisation.
