Yar’Adua Gives Directive On
Africa Youth Day
President
Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has asked all the states in Nigeria to organise events to
mark the Africa Youth Day on the first day of November of every year, beginning
from the Year 2010.
President Yar’Adua gave the directive at the occasion in Abuja, to mark the Year
2009 Africa Youth Day; with the theme, ’’Productive Youth for stability and
Economic Development.’’
The Nigerian President said his administration recognised the noble role
Nigerian youths have played in the country’s history, saying it was worthy of
acknowledgement and celebration.
He said the Africa Youth Day presented a unique opportunity for Nigerian youth
and their counterparts across the continent to showcase their enormous potential
and rededicate themselves to their roles as successor generation of the present
leadership.
At the event, the Minister of Youth Development, Mr. Akinlabi Olasunkanmi, said
the cardinal objective of the celebration was to create an opportunity to
showcase the potential of African youth and celebrate their contribution to
national development.
He said the day served as a clarion call to youths to stand up to the challenges
of unemployment and political instability and be actively involved in every
process of development.
