Optimism On Darfur Ceasefire
The
Joint Special Representative of the AU/UN Mission in Darfur,
Professor Ibrahim Gambari, has welcomed the signing of an
agreement aimed at ending hostilities between the Sudanese
government and a rebel group.
The Mission in a statement quoted Gambari as describing the
agreement as another important milestone toward ending the
seven-year conflict in the region.
Gambari described the pact as an all-inclusive and comprehensive
peace agreement that should usher in durable peace and stability
in Darfur.
He said there was need for Khartoum and the Liberation and
Justice Movement (LJM), which signed the framework agreement, to
implement its contents.
The pact includes taking steps toward a ceasefire between the
two sides in Darfur, where an estimated three hundred thousand
have been killed and two point seven million others displaced
since 2003.
