The
Nigerian Senate says the creation of additional
states in the country will only be feasible if the
1982 States and Boundary Adjustment Act is amended.
Chairman, Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999
Constitution, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, said this
while briefing Senate Correspondents at the National
Assembly, Abuja.
Senator Ekweremadu who is also the Deputy Senate
President said that section eight of the 1999
constitution must also be amended for the creation
of more states in the country.
The Provisions
Von
Correspondent, Obiora Ani, quotes the Deputy Senate
President as saying that “while the 1982 States and
Boundary Adjustment Act was not specific on who
participates in the referendum, section eight of the
1999 constitution did not define who will conduct or
vote in the referendum”.
Advice
Meanwhile, the Nigerian National Assembly has been
advised to critically examine the provisions of the
1999 constitution during the much anticipated
constitutional review.
An
Islamic leader based in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Sheikh
Yahaya Oshoala, gave the advice in Lagos while
fielding questions from newsmen.
He
urged the lawmakers to be guided by the report of
the Justice Mohammed Uwais Electoral Reform
Committee.
