Zimbabwe Not Bothered
By South African Court Ruling
Collins Atohengbe, Pretoria, South Africa
The
Zimbabwean authorities have said it will not be bothered by a
South African court ruling in favour of Whites who lost their
farms in the wake of attacks which attended the land
redistribution crises in Zimbabwe about five years ago.
According to the Zimbabwean officials there is an existing
agreement between it and South Africa to protect each other’s
property located in their territories and that it was Pretoria’s
responsibility.
The Ruling
The ruling allows White South Africans who were affected by
Harare’s land reform programme to be attached with any
Zimbabwean state owned property in South Africa.
The Challenge
VON Southern Africa Correspondent, reports that South Africa may
appeal the judgment on the strength of the agreement between the
two countries.
The agreement has made the North Gauteng court ruling difficult
to carry out though white South African owned farms in Zimbabwe
are believed to have been covered by the same bilateral
agreement.
