Committee On Cabotage
Scheme Instituted
A
five-man committee on the implementation of the cabotage regime
in Nigeria has been inaugurated.
The Minister of Transport, Alhaji Ibrahim Bio, on Wednesday in
Abuja, tasked the committee to look into the implementation of
the cabotage regime since its inception in Nigeria.
Its terms of reference include the investigation of allegation
that the ministry had delayed the granting of waivers by the
Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
Tasks
The committee is also to verify if NIMASA had been sending its
waiver request to the Ministry, investigate the processing of
applications for waivers and identify causes of delay, if any,
in the process.
The committee is also mandated to investigate the issuance of
temporary permit to vessel owners, identify loopholes in the
process and make recommendations that would enhance and
accelerate the implementation of the Cabotage Act.
Members
Captain Ibrahim Biu, the Executive Secretary, Nigeria Shippers’
Council, is the committee’s Chairman while other members are:
Mrs Chinwe Ezenwa, Deputy Director, Federal Ministry of
Transport; Mr. Igwe of NIMASA, Mrs Uche Amadi of the Nigerian
Ports Authority and Mr. Danjuma Dauda of the Federal Ministry of
Transport, as the Secretary.
It is to ensure that Nigerians benefit from the local content of
the maritime industry as designed by the Cabotage Act.
