Kenya’s Parliament Votes Against Re Appointment Of
Anti Corruption Boss
The
Kenyan parliament has voted against a government
motion on the re-appointment of the head of the
country's anti-corruption commission.
The angry lawmakers said by re-appointing Ringera,
Kibaki had basically shot himself in the foot,
further weakening his government.
Ringera, who has led Kenya’s Anti-Corruption
Commission since its formation in 2003, has said his
work was hampered by poor court systems and laws.
The watchdog receives about half its funding from
the treasury.
The dispute has seen independent MPs lining up with
members of the unity government against Kibaki and
his cabinet allies.
Kibaki has been under heavy fire from critics since
on Monday, when he renewed the contracts of Justice
Aaron Ringera and two deputies for a second
five-year term without consulting members of
parliament or the watchdogs own advisory board.
