Benin Republic Earmarks 30 Per
Cent Of Annual Budget For Education
Benin
Republic is to spend thirty per cent of its budget for the
development of education sector.
President Yayi Boni gave the indication in a broadcast, a day
before the resumption of schools. According to him, “the sector
got 16 per cent in 2005 and got 20 per cent in 2006.”
He reaffirmed his commitment to raising the percentage to
between 35 and 40 per cent in the next few years.
Landmark
In a bold effort to improve the quality of education in the West
African country, government has employed more than 4,000 new
teachers and had pledged to increase teachers' specific
allowances from 8, 000 CFA francs to 10,000 CFA francs from next
year.
Government had also released three billion CFA francs for the
initial running costs of schools to ensure a smooth resumption
of classes.
This bold initiative is a clear departure from the practice of
most developing countries that spend far less on education.
