World Bank Commends
Nigeria’s Vision 20:20:20

The
Managing Director of the World Bank, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
says Nigeria has taken steps to realize her agenda to be one of
the twenty largest economies of the world by the Year
Twenty-Twenty.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala made the remark in a lecture at the
convocation ceremony of the University of Calabar, Cross River
state, south Nigeria.
She remarked that the recent banking and economic reforms,
including the stabilisation of the micro economy and a bank
consolidation exercise were steps in the right direction to
actualise the twenty-twenty objectives.
The World Bank Director suggested that what remains is for
Nigerian leaders to consolidate the country’s leadership role in
Africa by sustaining recent gains to remain a significant player
in the global economic and political arena.
Policy focus
She emphasised that policy actions must focus on the exchange
rate, curbing fiscal deficit and keeping an eye on debt
increase, especially domestic debt as well as managing the bank
recapitalisation exercise with the utmost transparency and
fairness.
The former Nigerian finance minister also said that Nigeria must
find ways of diversifying her economy away from oil and creating
jobs for the youths.
The lecture she delivered was titled: Safeguarding Nigeria’s
Fiscal Health.
