Forum On Aviation Security Holds In

A
three-day Regional Ministerial Conference on Aviation Security
opens today in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, with call on countries
of the world to collaborate in tackling security threats to the
global aviation industry.
U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, in the
lead-up to the forum stressed that information sharing among
countries was vital in efforts to combat terrorism.
She said that the areas of collaboration should include
information collection and analysis, information sharing and
collaboration in passenger vetting, international security
standards and development of infrastructure and screening
technology.
Napolitano said that terrorism was not a problem to the U.S.
alone, but a menace to the world at large.
Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Mrs. Fidelia Njeze said that
Nigeria had striven to improve aviation security and that
security issues were paramount to the Nigerian government.
Security measures
She said that measures to enhance aviation safety included the
installation of the 3D Body Scanners at airports and the signing
of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the U.S. on having
air marshals aboard U.S. bound flights.
The minister called on airline operators and stakeholders,
within and outside the country, to make efforts to enhance
security and screening of passengers.
Njeze assured the U.S. government of Nigeria’s readiness to
partner with countries in efforts to fight threats to the
aviation industry.
