ABIA Steps Up Effort Against Avian Influenza

Nkechi Gabriel, Enugu

The Abia State Government has stepped up efforts to prevent and control any Avian Influenza outbreak in the State.

The Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. Jonathan Agbai-Kalu said these efforts include series of sensitization programmes organised by government in local government areas.

Similarly, the state government has already received a Hilux-Van, and nineteen motorcycles from the Federal Government, for the effective grassroots mobilization, and disease surveillance, under the Avian Influenza projects.

Meanwhile, UNICEF has expressed its determination to partner with individuals and organizations in the country, to help promote child and maternal survival in Nigeria and Africa.

Speaking at the end of a workshop on how to promote Child Survival, the Head of UNICEF field Office in Enugu state, Mrs. Pauline Ntanboweki, said UNICEF was determined to do this financially and otherwise.

UNICEF says ten million children, under the age of five, die annually, around the world.

The workshop took into consideration child Survival issues in the area of prevention, such as exclusive Breast feeding, sleeping under insecticide-Treated-Mosquito Nets, and the use of Oral-dehydration solution, amongst others.

It was organized by UNICEF in Enugu State for Directors of Programmes and Producers of Radio Stations across the Eastern part of Nigeria.
