Steps Up Effort Against Avian Influenza

The
Abia State Government has stepped up efforts to
prevent and control any Avian Influenza outbreak in
the State.
The Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of
Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. Jonathan
Agbai-Kalu said these efforts include series of
sensitization programmes organised by government in
local government areas.
Similarly, the state government has already received
a Hilux-Van, and nineteen motorcycles from the
Federal Government, for the effective grassroots
mobilization, and disease surveillance, under the
Avian Influenza projects.
Meanwhile, UNICEF has expressed its determination to
partner with individuals and organizations in the
country, to help promote child and maternal survival
in Nigeria and Africa.
Speaking at the end of a workshop on how to promote
Child Survival, the Head of UNICEF field Office in
Enugu state, Mrs. Pauline Ntanboweki, said UNICEF
was determined to do this financially and otherwise.
UNICEF says ten million children, under the age of
five, die annually, around the world.
The workshop took into consideration child Survival
issues in the area of prevention, such as exclusive
Breast feeding, sleeping under
insecticide-Treated-Mosquito Nets, and the use of
Oral-dehydration solution, amongst others.
It was organized by UNICEF in Enugu State for
Directors of Programmes and Producers of Radio
Stations across the Eastern part of Nigeria.
