Local Chapter
Supports Suspension Of University Teachers’ Strike
Tongnaan, Jos
The
University of Jos Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of
Universities (ASUU),has resolved to support suspension of the
over three-month old strike by the union for two weeks to allow
for conclusion of negotiations between it and the Federal
Government.
The chapter took the decision at a special congress meeting
called in line with the decision of the National Executive
Committee of the union to allow congresses of the various
chapters to make inputs into whether or not the strike should be
suspended.
Briefing
Journalists at the end of the meeting, Chairman of the chapter,
Dr. Timothy Namo said members expressed satisfaction with the
briefing they got on the progress made so far and supported the
suspension of the strike.
Namo however,
added that members expressed apprehension that government might
again renege on signing the agreement, hence the decision to
suspend rather than an outright call off of the strike.
He said the
national leadership of ASUU would collate the decisions reached
by the various chapters and announce the consensus of opinions
of members at a meeting on Friday.
