Consulate
To Probe Assault On Nigerians In South Africa
Tony Ekata, Johannesburg
The
Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg says it will look
into complaints by Nigerian traders and businessmen in the
Yeoville province, who were reportedly assaulted by policemen
during the week.
A police team, which identified itself as a task force, was said
to have raided the area, ostensibly looking for drugs and in the
process beating up the traders, including women.
The attacks, reported to the consulate for necessary actions,
left many Nigerians with huge losses of property as well as
injuries from beatings.
Mr. Anayo Iloms, who runs an eatery in the area, said the raids
and beatings began on Monday and continued till Wednesday,
forcing the victims to troop to the Yeoville Police Station to
open dockets for charges of assault, brutalisation and other
offences.
The General Secretary of the Gauteng Chapter of the Nigeria
Union, Prince Adesina Adebowale, said that the attacks seemed to
be targeted at Nigerians.
Senior Superintendent Lobisi Motaung, of Yeoville Police
Station, said that dockets had been opened in respect of
complaints by the Nigerians and would be allocated to officers
to handle.
