Angolan Police Arrest
2 Over Togolese Attack
The
police in Angola have arrested two suspects in connection with
Friday's attack on the Togolese football team.
Gunmen using machine-guns had opened fire on a bus carrying
Togo’s football team killing the driver, an assistant coach and
a media spokesman.
Nine other people were injured in the attack, which led the team
from Togo to withdraw from the ongoing Nations Cup championship.
The Breakthrough
The suspects were captured in the northern Angolan province of
Cabinda, close to where the raid took place.
Cabinda is located inside the Democratic Republic of Congo and a
faction of a local separatist rebel group, the Front for the
Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda, has claimed responsibility
for the attack.
Mourning
The Togolese authorities have declared three days of
mourning, starting on Monday, for the victims of the attack. As
the remains of the team members arrived in Lome, families and
friends of the deceased wept uncontrollably at the airport.
Meanwhile, the Confederation of African Football, CAF, and the
Angolan government have send condolence messages to the
government and people of Togo, as the 27th African Nations Cup
get underway in various centers across Angola.
