EU to Partner Nigeria On Amnesty
Programme
The
European Union (EU) says it will partner with Nigeria on the
amnesty programme to ensure the development of the country.
The French Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Jean-Michel Dumond, said
this in Port Harcourt, at the end of a closed door meeting of
fifteen foreign envoys with Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers
State, Southern Nigeria.
Ambassador Dumond said the EU believed that such programme would
bring a long term solution to Nigeria’s oil crises.
Satisfaction
He said the EU was impressed with the success of the amnesty
programme so far and expressed the hope that the Federal
Government would put in place measures to make the 2011 general
elections free and fair.
Dumond particularly commended Amaechi for what he described as a
determined effort to develop the state, adding that they were
impressed with what they had seen in the state.
Governor Amaechi said the aim of the meeting was to discuss
issues concerning the wrong perception about the security
situation in the Niger Delta, especially in Rivers state.
He thanked the envoys for honouring the invitation, which he
said, was an indication that things were beginning to improve in
the state.
Roll Call
Ambassadors of Brazil, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Ghana High
Commissioner, German Consul-General, British Deputy High
Commissioner, Netherlands’ The Charge D’Affairs and Indian
Defence Adviser were among those who attended the meeting.
